The River City Rap

Posted by: Sarah In: Arlington| Richmond

First there was Arlington: the Rap and now I give you Richmond the Rap:

(Hat tip to Young House Love)

Which is your favorite?  Arlington: the Rap or the River City Rap?

As a native Richmonder, sadly, I’ve got to vote for Arlington the Rap as the best of the two. This video does show off some of Richmond’s great features, but fails in the satire department. Seems more like a promotional video, albeit a really fun promotional video. They got a few funny jabs in there, but it doesn’t quite carry through the whole video. I also feel they missed a big opportunity to make fun of West-Enders :-).

Your comments on the Arlington Rap winning are confusing. Isn’t the purpose of a city-themed rap video to be about unique attributes of the area? The Arlington Rap talks about Whole Foods and regularly shows big box retailers, such as Crate & Barrel, which you can find anywhere in the USA. If you took “Short Pump” or “Charlotte, NC” and put it into the Arlington Rap, you wouldn’t know any difference. Never mind that the Arlington video shows the same backgrounds again and again…Conversely, the Richmond rap video is extremely authentic and it looks professional.

Hey Robinson Street,

Sorry to not be clear in my statements. I think the River City Rap fails in the satire department. It’s just not as funny. The reason the Arlington Rap showed Whole Foods and other chain stores is because he’s making fun of the Yuppy Arlington lifestyle, not trying to show the great unique features of Arlington. I can go to any tourism video for that. Remmy is trying to make his audience laugh at the ridiculousness of a certain type of people that live in Arlington.

On the other hand, it appears at the beginning that the River City Rap folks are trying to mimic the Arlington Rap, but the satire just doesn’t carry through the whole video in as unified of a manner.

You are right that as a tourism video that shows off the great features of the city, the River City Rap is the better video, but I was hoping for a satirical jab at some of the funny things about Richmond and it just didn’t deliver as much as I’d hoped in that department.

I guess it’s all about what you are looking for in the video. No worries though. I still love Richmond and Robinson Street.

Thanks for your reply, Sarah. I completely understand your viewpoint, but these videos were made with different purposes. Richmond’s wasn’t made to be satirical, it was made in production with Y Richmond, which recruits young professionals to live in Richmond.
